The BOV Premier League second day programme kicks off this afternoon with the first two matches of the weekend at the Hibernians Stadium.

The four teams in action today will be looking for the first win, after all having failed to take full points in their opening match of the new season last week.

Tarxien Rainbows play Sliema Wanderers in the first match (kick off 6.30pm). The Wanderers could only draw against eternal rivals Floriana last Saturday while Tarxien Rainbows lost against Champions Valletta with a Jonathan Caruana goal.

Sliema have still to settle down after making quite some changes to their squad for the new campaign under Italian coach Alfonso Greco, including new foreigners Branislav Timotic, Pablo Gonzalez, Matias Muchardi and El Ghaouti.

Tarxien played too defensively against Valletta, understandably to avoid an embarassing defeat, but need be more adventurous if they hope to start picking points.

Tarxien’s coach Danilo Doncic will be facing his former club Sliema, whom he coached till last season as he plots perhaps the first surprise of the season.

In the second match, Floriaan play Hamrun Spartans (kick off 8.30pm). Both teams drew their opening matches against Sliema Wanderers and Balzan respectively to gain a point. The Spartans had twice taken the lead against Balzan but were caught out on both occasions, with the goalkeeper Andrea Cassar also saving a decisive penalty from Calcado. It has to be seen whether this youngster keeps his place in goal today, as new signing Anthony Curmi is waiting eagerly to make his debut with the Spartans.

Floriana, under new English coah Mark Wright look to improve upon their first performance and hope they get the clearance of some new English players recruited for the new season.
